Pineapples have perhaps been trivialised as a holiday, summer and the base for the perfect pina colada or daiquiri. Interestingly this fruit is actuallya collection of flowers, each with its own eye that is fused around the centre core, and it takes roughly three years for a single pineapple to reach full maturation.
Pineapples are high in fibre, vitamins A&C and folic acid. Of particular interest is the phytonutrient bromelain that has long been celebrated for its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial capacity, with some in-the-know scientists suggesting it’s perfectly placed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular conditions like thrombosis by working to tackle blood clotting.
So pineapples may well look fancy in your fruit bowl or perched on the end of your cocktail, but in truth they have the potential to bring so much more to the party.
