What was the inspiration for starting Cotswold RAW?
A very personal experience! My puppy Nellie was very ill and not responding to either veterinary visits or an array of recommended diets. I was talking to a colleague who introduced me to ‘raw’ thinking, the notion that dogs were scavenging and hunting long before words like kibble and canned food had been invented. Mark (now my co-founder) explained how modern day ‘convenience’ pet food is often inadvertently to blame for poor pet health: runny stools, bad breath, inflamed gums, lacklustre gums, weak joints…. We were so inspired by our subsequent research (county shows, talking to leading industry lights….) that we set up our fledgling rural based business.
Describe a typical day at Cotswold RAW HQ?
Busy (never dull!). We’re a small team (7) so everyone has to roll up their sleeves as our business continues to take significant strides forwards. For me mornings are always order, delivery and paperwork based as meeting our customer’s needs is always of paramount importance. We are a business that’s made its name on product quality and customer service and our customer base is eclectic from nationwide pet food chains to local breeders and owners. We’ve never lost sight of the loyalists who stuck with us from the beginning and appreciate that our strength is an ongoing willingness to always go the extra yard for our customers.
Where Do You See Cotswold RAW in 5 Years Time
We hope that raw thinking will hit the mainstream within 5 years with core pet food centres like supermarkets, garden centres and online recognizing the added value that a credible RAW offer makes to their wider pet food fixture. We also believe that pet friendly hotels, pubs (even kennels) will embrace a nutritionally rich food offer that puts pet health at the heart of its proposition.

RAW – simple back-to-basics thinking is very in vogue
HPP (high pressure processing) is starting to make its presence felt in premium pet food
Regional offerings that support their local farming infrastructure (big cold corporate offerings is not everyone’s cup of tea) – ingredient provenance is king!
