WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION TO START YOUR FOOD BLOG?
It was down to two things. Firstly, I was very ill a few years ago which involved a lot of time sitting around at home. I always enjoyed writing and I love food, so I decided to use my recovery time to start a blog. Secondly, I kept reading about all the amazing restaurants and bars in London, talking about them with my friends, but then never actually getting around to visiting any of them. I decided to write about the London food scene so that I would have something motivating me to get out there and experience more of it.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO EAT?
I have quite eclectic tastes but generally I love anything that’s made with great quality, local, seasonal produce. I have a soft spot for traditional British dishes, such as anything with game, pies, or a really hearty pudding. You can’t beat a really great burger either – the selection by Bleecker Burger is my favourite. However, part of the philosophy of “The Determined Diner” is to try new things, so I’m always on the lookout for the unusual.
FAVOURITE RESTAURANT AND WHY?
It’s so difficult to just choose one! I’m going to say Petrus – which is now known as Marcus, after executive chef Marcus Wareing. I visited many years ago and it still stands out as one of the best dining experiences of my life. It was the first Michelin starred restaurant that I had been to. Both the food and the service were outstanding; it was such a treat. I still remember my main course of salt marsh lamb with braised gem lettuce, even after all these years. It was cooked to perfection. There’s also a little French restaurant in Clapham, called Gastro, that I love. It does classic French cooking and the food is consistently excellent. Oh and St John in Clerkenwell too – a must if you’re a carnivore and a little bit brave!
WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT BLOGGING ABOUT YOUR TOPIC?
It can sometimes be tricky to find the time, particularly when fitting it in around my day job as I often have to work very long hours. Funding my food habit can also be challenging. In an ideal world, I would eat out at least once a week and blog about it, but it doesn’t always work out that way. However, I love doing this and I’ve met so many great people as a result, so it’s totally worth all the little challenges.
HOW WOULD SOMEONE DESCRIBE YOUR BLOGGING STYLE?
Informal, friendly, engaging, humorous.
HOW DO YOU KEEP COMING UP WITH MATERIAL/CONTENT FOR YOUR BLOG?
When I first started the blog, I used Time Out’s Top 100 Restaurants list for inspiration. The idea was for me to eventually work my way through all of them, but I still haven’t managed it! To be honest, it’s not difficult to be inspired when you live in London.
NAME SOME OF THE BLOGGERS WHO YOU ADMIRE AND WHY?
He’s not a blogger as such, but I really like Clerkenwell Boy. His photos are always a pleasure to look at. I also like We The Food Snobs. Their website is very accessible and enjoy their engaging writing style.
