- Granny Cool, run by two mums who met at the school gates
- Humble regional beginnings has led to substantial, national growth
- Launching into 339 Sainsbury’s stores on June 19th
- Authentic, family recipes using all natural ingredients
Nikki Frith made the first pan of original three fruit marmalade in the autumn of 2012 using a longstanding family recipe sourced from her husband’s Granny, Marjorie Richardson. Just one month later Granny Cool, or Granny Marmalade as it was known then, was available at local farmers markets, and the following year, on Valentines’ Day, Lindsey Oldroyd, a fellow school run mum, joined the Granny Cool team.
Through their meteoric success, having gone from zero stockists to 80 in six months, the pair were soon on the BBC’s radar and were invited to pitch on Dragon’s Den. The Dragon’s were all thoroughly impressed with the product, but weren’t convinced by the branding or company name and therefore saw it as a purely regional success, with no real national appeal, with Peter Jones even commenting “you have a fantastic product, but this will only ever be regional”.
Rather than walk away defeated, Nikki and Lindsey used what they had learnt during the experience to rebrand and relaunch without compromising one ounce of integrity and what really makes the brand what it is.
Today each batch of Granny Cool marmalade and curds is still made to the exacting standards Granny would expect, using hand cut, fresh fruit and the traditional homemade open pan method, producing a delicious selection of natural marmalades and curds.
This absolute faith in both the product and what the brand stands for has led to an ever growing regional popularity and as of this summer will see two of Granny Cool’s most beloved flavours, original three fruit marmalade and ginger marmalade, launching into Sainsbury’s supermarket as part of a very exciting new national partnership.
This next step on Granny Cool’s mission to wake up the nation’s toast, shows that it is possible to bring a handmade, artisan product to the shelves of a national supermarket without losing the essential integrity of the brand – and maybe even shows that Dragon’s don’t know everything!
Nikki Frith, Founder of Granny Cool says “We are super excited and extremely proud to be launching nationally with Sainsbury’s. We’ve beaten the odds on achieving this and hope this is only the start of our journey. Granny Cool are looking forward to waking up the nations toast one slice at a time…”
